Hilltop villages, châteaux and abbeys
Emblematic of the Luberon, the villages were built around medieval castles. Perched atop the hills, it was possible to see the enemy coming and make their task difficult. Over a thousand years, they have grown, have seen out terrible crises and enjoyed wonderful rebirths. A testimony of the rich history of the Luberon, the villages are still evolving to this day, by mixing preservation of architectural and landscaping heritage with modern developments.
Places to discover in the Vaucluse include Roussillon, Gordes, Gargas, Gargas, Goult, Ansouis, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Oppède le Vieux, Ménerbes and Lourmarin. Plus, don’t miss the Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey amid the fields of lavender. Founded in 1148, it is a testimony to the influence of the Cistercian order in Provence.
